There are a number of ways to deal with missing teeth. Your dental professional is likely to suggest being fitted for one or more dental bridges. If you’ve never actually seen a bridge, there are bound to be some questions. What sort of benefits can you expect once the bridge or bridges are in position? Here are some advantages you will enjoy.

What is a Dental Bridge?

A bridge is a type of dental prosthesis that fills in the gap left by one or more missing teeth. While there are several different designs, most are constructed to attach or fit over the teeth found on each side of the gap. The artificial teeth that make up the body of the bridge are referred to as pontics. The teeth that are prepared to help hold the pontics in position are known as the abutment teeth.

Making It Easier to Chew

All types of dental bridges make it much easier to chew your foot. Once in position, it’s not unusual for the dentist to reinforce the hold on the abutment teeth with a set of crowns. This creates a strong surface that will not shift as you chew. The result is that you can masticate with greater ease, something that’s definitely good for your digestion.

Preserving the Contours of Your Jaw

Leaving empty spaces between teeth will cause the jawbone to shift and shrink over time. You’ll find that a bridge helps to slow that process a bit. It will take more years for the lower part of your face to take on a shrunken appearance. That gives you time to think about he possibility of replacing the bridge with an implant or two later on. Your dentist can help you compare a dental bridge vs. implant options and decide which approach would be best in the long run.

Prevent Teeth From Shifting

Leaving the gaps open will make it easier for the surrounding teeth to shift positions over time. They may begin to cave inward, lean into the empty space, or start to protrude outward. In any case, your once perfectly straight set of teeth will now be crooked. While there are dental bridges pros and cons to discuss, one of the major advantages is preventing your remaining natural teeth from shifting. That’s because the pontic fills the gap nicely and does not leave room for shifting.

Restore Your Smile

You aren’t smiling much these days because you don’t want anyone to see the gap. Undergoing a

dental bridge procedure eliminates that worry. The device can be tinted to match the shade of the surrounding teeth. Once the work is completed, no one will be able to detect the bridge at all. It will look as if you have a full set of natural teeth. Feel free to smile as much as you like.

You will have plenty of questions about bridges and your dental professional will be happy to provide answers. How long do dental bridges last and what must be done to take proper care of them? Are they as strong as real teeth? What if I want to remove the bridge later and get implants? Talk with your dentist and learn more about the dental bridge benefits you will enjoy now and later. Once you know what to expect, making the best decision will be easy.

It's been a while since I've been to a dentist but I'm trying to get back on track with health in general. Overall it was great going to Markham Smile Centre! The receptionist (I believe she was Kim) was friendly. The hygienist, Ying, was attentive and gentle during the cleaning; x-ray tech (forgot her name, sorry!) was great too. Dr. Sara Riad explained things with good detail. Looking forward to going back!

The clinic was clean and the staff was very polite. I particularly liked the fact that everything was explained to me before going in for the procedure so I knew what to expect at each step. The dental hygienist who did the cleaning for me was also very gentle and took my concerns into consideration. I will definitely recommend them.

Since I was little, I have always hated going to the dentist... Its always uncomfortable and unpleasant. These days, visiting the dentist isn’t so bad! Dr Jason, Rory, and the lovely staff at reception make the experience 100x better. I have had absolutely no issues with the gum graft and cleanings that I’ve gotten done here. Everyone is incredibly friendly and helpful, even when I’m calling in or emailing a hundred questions :). I would highly recommend Markham Smile Centre.
