You’ve lost several teeth and your dentist recommends a dental bridge. While there are other options, this is the one that your dental professional would be best for you. Before you make a decision, it pays to learn more about bridges and what you can expect from them. Here are four questions that your dentist will be happy to answer.

What are Dental Bridges?

Dental bridges are a type of prosthesis that is used to fill in the expanse created by missing teeth. Unlike dentures, a bridge is not designed to rest on the gum and be held in place using a temporary adhesive. Instead, bridges are considered a permanent solution that provides you with all the functions and looks of natural teeth.

How Do They Stay in Place ?

This type of Markham dentistry solution stays in place because it is adhered to the teeth on each side of the gap. The bonding agents used to position the bridge ensure there will be no slippage, so you can forget about some of the problems people experience with dentures moving out of place. Just as the bridge is made using durable materials like porcelain, the agents used to create the bond with your real teeth will not break down for a long time. You can expect to get years of use from the bridge and know it will stay in place as you chew, smile, talk, or laugh.

Will They Look Natural?

One of the great things about bridges is that they are custom fitted to fill in the gap perfectly. That requires modeling the bridge so it resembles the teeth that once occupied the space. A lot of detail work goes into creating a bridge. As you will see before the dentist begins the bonding, each bridge is designed to match the color, shape, and size of the teeth that were once present. The result is a look that is completely natural.

Are Bridges Completed in One Appointment?

Typically, two dental visits are necessary in order to be fitted for a bridge. The first appointment allows time for the dental team to measure the gap, and identify the general shape and size for each of the false teeth composing the bridge. To make sure the fit will be perfect, the team will take impressions of the gap along with some additional measurements. The dentist will also take a close look at the natural teeth serving as anchors for the bridge. This is to ensure those teeth are sturdy enough to hold the bridge in place.

You can expect for the second appointment to occur around two weeks later. By that time, the bridge will be finished and the team has checked it to make sure there are no defects. The team will move the bridge into position and ensure that the proportion, sizing, and general fit are perfect. Expect for them to ask if you experience any type of discomfort once the bridge is in place. If everything seems to be fine, the bonding agents are applied and allowed time to set.

Remember that bridges do not eliminate the need for proper dental hygiene or mean that you can avoid regular checkups. Brushing, flossing, and annual exams will ensure there are no problems with the bridge and also provide the opportunity to keep the remainder of your natural teeth in top condition.

It's been a while since I've been to a dentist but I'm trying to get back on track with health in general. Overall it was great going to Markham Smile Centre! The receptionist (I believe she was Kim) was friendly. The hygienist, Ying, was attentive and gentle during the cleaning; x-ray tech (forgot her name, sorry!) was great too. Dr. Sara Riad explained things with good detail. Looking forward to going back!

Since I was little, I have always hated going to the dentist... Its always uncomfortable and unpleasant. These days, visiting the dentist isn’t so bad! Dr Jason, Rory, and the lovely staff at reception make the experience 100x better. I have had absolutely no issues with the gum graft and cleanings that I’ve gotten done here. Everyone is incredibly friendly and helpful, even when I’m calling in or emailing a hundred questions :). I would highly recommend Markham Smile Centre.
